Meet Hilary Miller, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, an Assistant Professor in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) Department!

 

After earning a dual undergraduate degree in chemistry and Spanish from the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Dr. Miller lived in Spain and taught English to young students for two years. She didn’t know exactly what career she wanted to pursue when she returned to the US; however, she realized she enjoyed science, teaching, language, and working with children. This led her to explore speech-language pathology (SLP), a field that seemed to combine all of her interests. Once home from Spain, Dr. Miller returned to UNH, where she earned her Master’s of Science in SLP. She then worked as a speech-language pathologist in schools before earning a doctoral degree in SLHS from Boston University. 

 

Dr. Miller was drawn to working in UConn’s SLHS Department because of the department’s clinical reputation in combination with its vibrant language science and neuroscience research community. Her main research and clinical interests focus broadly on apraxia of speech and, more specifically, childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). This research includes examining speech learning and motor planning and programming, and how these occur in the brain. Dr. Miller’s lab is currently setting up to perform acoustic analyses of speech. She also plans to continue researching how prosody develops, as well as how articulation and prosody are different in CAS than in typically speaking children. Dr. Miller further shares that her favorite part of her job is having the opportunity to always learn new things and to work with students!
