Pre-literacy Training for the Early Childhood Educator

On March 26, 2024, Nicole W. Gallagher, SLP and Associate Clinical Professor, and Kylie Boyle, 1st year MA SLP graduate student from UConn’s SLHS department presented to seven local, community center and home-based early childhood educators from Mansfield and UConn Jump Start students on early literacy concepts to meet requirements of CT’s school readiness grant program offered through the Office of Early Childhood. They were invited speakers through their collaborations with UConn Child Labs Program and Mansfield Advocates for Children (MAC). Topics included language and pre-literacy developmental expectations for children ages birth to six, infant, toddler and preschool classroom strategies and resources for classroom implementation, along with the provision of educational resources for caregivers. Nicole and her MA SLP students provide weekly pre-literacy prevention community-based programming to both preschool classrooms at UConn Child Labs.
