Alumni Spotlight: Erica V. DeCasanova, Au.D., CCC-A, CH-AP

Meet Erica V. DeCasanova, Au.D, CCC-A, CH-AP, an alum of UConn’s Doctorate of Audiology program!

Dr. DeCasanova is a proud Double Husky, having earned her undergraduate degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Psychology from UConn in 2017, followed by her Doctorate of Audiology degree (Au.D.) in 2021.

Dr. DeCasanova discovered audiology and quickly fell in love with the field’s combination of science and technology, and most importantly, the opportunity to help people connect and communicate. She also loved that audiology felt like solving a puzzle – putting together test results, observations, medical history, and family concerns to understand a patient’s specific needs and determine how to best support them.

Following completion of her Au.D., Dr. DeCasanova began her career at Easter Seals for Better Hearing, where she worked with patients across the lifespan and gained valuable clinical experience in various areas, building a strong foundation in audiology. She joined Connecticut Children’s as a pediatric audiologist in 2022, combining her love of problem-solving with her passion for helping children access the hearing support they need to communicate and thrive.

Dr. DeCasanova’s primary clinical interests are pediatric audiology, cochlear implants (CIs), early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI), electrophysiologic testing, and clinical precepting. She also has a particular interest in congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) screening and its connection to pediatric hearing loss. She states that Connecticut has been a leader in cCMV screening, expanding to universal screening for all newborns beginning in July 2025.

Her favorite part of her job is being part of a team that collaborates to provide early identification of hearing loss and seeing the impact that early intervention can have on a child and their family. Dr. DeCasanova finds it incredibly rewarding to piece together the details of each child’s hearing profile to gain a holistic understanding of their individual needs. She says that watching children gain access to sound, develop communication skills, and thrive is incredibly meaningful.

A fun fact about Dr. DeCasanova is that she enjoys walking on the Farmington Canal Trail with her husband, twin sons, and her dog, Rigatoni!
