As we head into the summer, we wanted to highlight some of the recent accomplishments in the SLHS department. Read below to learn more about the recent awards received by Dr. Maggu, Dr. Tufts, and AuD student, Zane Carey!
- Dr. Akshay Maggu was selected to attend the Lessons for Success program in April 2024. Lessons for Success is the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s 3-day intensive grant-writing bootcamp for early-stage principal investigators. Approximately 30 participants who show promise for a productive research career were selected through a rigorous application process for this program
- This past February at the National Hearing Conservation Association’s annual conference in Albuquerque, Dr. Tufts and her co-author, Dr. Jesse Norris of Edare LLC, were recognized with the NHCA Outstanding Lecture Award for their presentation at last year’s conference, “Developing a fast and easy system for hearing- and earplug fit-testing: An update on what we have learned”. In this presentation, they described the development and validation of a new, efficient, and user-friendly system for conducting hearing tests and earplug fit-tests in workplace and field environments. Their work was funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
- AuD student, Zane Carey, was chosen as one of the IBACS Summer Outreach Fellows. The Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS) selected four graduate students to be part of the Science Alliance Mobile (SAM) Outreach Team through the opportunity fellowship fund. The SAM is outfitted with a soundbooth, space for behavioral testing, a meeting room, and computer space for mobile equipment use. The goal is to host events and provide opportunities in areas with underrepresented populations to increase interest in education within the brain and cognitive science fields. During the academic year, Zane spent time developing plans for demos and educational activities for all ages, and they expect to take the SAM van to a few summer camps/schools this summer. Zane looks forward to engaging the next generation of IBACS scientists.
