Head Start Hearing Screenings

UConn’s AuD program has been partnered with the New Britain Human Resources Agency Head Start program for nearly 15 years to provide hearing screenings for children who are at-risk for having a hearing difference. Each year, UConn’s AuD faculty and second year students help train the first year AuD students to conduct the hearing screenings, following a protocol based on the one recommended by The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM). The screenings involve the assessment of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and are supplemented by including the use of tympanometry when needed. This past fall, UConn’s AuD students visited New Britain’s Head Start program several times and provided more than 200 children with hearing screenings through this partnership!
